Welcome

Primitive religion is not believed, it is danced!

Arthur Darby Nock

Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

Bang, Bang... the stubborn earth, the stubborn heart

bang, bang
the young wildland fire fighter
stands
legs apart
holding a t-post

he is determined to drive it into the earth

bang, bang!
all he has is a small hand sledge
a pound, maybe two
not enough

for this patch of land
glacially packed with rocks
and rock
and more rocks

twang
the t-post shivers
as it hits yet another rock
and inch, maybe two below the surface

bang, twang
bang, twang

it isn’t happening
that post is not going to penetrate that earth

as I watch that young man
droop

I wonder if he must feel a little
as the sacred feels
when it tries to
find open passage
to my stubborn heart
