Fresh fallen snow
covers what once was mud
and now
is frozen
if latticed earth
the mountains
barely visible in the midst
are ghostly white
with hints of darkness
where the evergreens poke through a mantle of snow
Christmas lights shine through
softly drifting snowflakes
two small deer tiptoe across the yard
to see what succulent shrub
the can nibble on this morning
the horses nicker
expectant
for their morning hay
Inside a fire flickers in the fireplace
as Tess
the cat
rolls lazily on her back in front of it
I feel a bit like Jacob
who woke from a pillow of stone
in a very common place
and
while God's breath was still stirring the air
said in surprise,
"Surely God was in this place, and I did not know it!"
Ah!
We must see the whole world as an altar,
and recognize
That God can erupt anywhere!
