“Waiting turns men into bears in a barn, and women into cats
in a sack.”

I hate waiting
I am no fan of suspense
waiting for a conversation to occur that is
wrought with import
where a relationship hangs in the balance
waiting for the result of a test
waiting for a response,
when one has put one’s self out there
on the end of that proverbial limb
waiting for the Sacred One to answer
I hate waiting
I cannot imagine what the waiting was like
for the followers of Jesus
on that Saturday
the most important person in their life was gone
dead
buried
cold
entombed in unyielding stone
and all they could do
on that Sabbath day
when action was prohibited
was wait
and wait
and wait
the women like cats in a sack stirred
and busied themselves with planning
preparing to gather herbs and spices
preparing to gather herbs and spices
preparing to anoint the body
and the men sank like ponderous bears
into hibernation
too stunned to move
there
somewhere in Jerusalem
they waited
as we often wait
not knowing
as we often do not know
what the Sacred One was about to do
and therein
lies
the
problem
