“I like to think of psychology as soul-searching: you search
your soul and you also search for your soul; and, of course, on the quest your
soul is searching with you”
John
O’Donohue, Eternal Echoes, p. 231

I am all for soul searching
I want to be aware, even if it is painfully aware
of my soul
of that part of me which truly,
because it is the place where Sacred lives,
defines me
I want to find that place
(which can sometimes be difficult to find)
and delve deeply
who am I really?
what does it mean to be me, truly me?
this searching can be overrated and overdone
we can end up scraping away at our souls
we can become judgmental and rigid observers of our souls
rather than people who live from the soul
self awake
participants in our “one beautiful, unrepeatable life” (p.
235)
but still, any such endeavor is worth the risk
on my many treks into my soul,
here is one thing I have learned,
if nothing else
if I am going to come home to myself
and live from the soul
I have to let go of my expectations, always
but my dreams, never
I always need to keep hold of my dream of belonging
but must let go of my expectation about what that might look
like
It is good to dream of success, or relevance, but I must let
go of my expectations
about what success of relevance must look like
the soul comes up with its own definitions
as in Sacred Presence
we waken
to our own eternity
