Welcome

Primitive religion is not believed, it is danced!

Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

I can do this

Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.

                     Louis Armstrong

Friend to my son (5) after I got my doctorate.

Friend:  Bryce, what does it feel like to have a dad who is a doctor

Bryce: (thinking of his grandfather, who was a medical doctor)

Oh, it's OK, but he is not the kind of doctor who does anybody any good.

Me:   …….

___________________________________________________________________________________

I sit and stare blankly at the screen

my mind is empty

my hands are still

I do not know how long I have been sitting this way

My mind,

My heart

My soul

An anaesthetized wound

I cannot find the energy to think

To write

To move

To act

I am frozen

Brought to a complete stop

By a sense of futility

I have always been a striver.

I have always worked hard.

Perhaps too hard

And I have always wanted,

In my striving

To make a difference.

I know I have “done things”

Sometimes well

Sometimes?

Well….

As a pastor, I had churches grow,

As a mental health director, the program flourished

I did cool things

Like redesigning a primary care delivery system in Azerbaijan

But right now

When the world is stretched thin by hate and fear

And hopelessness abounds

I feel hopeless

A little useless

It is one blow after another.

A plethora of little losses

A church member disappears (we cannot afford any losses)

My country (IMHO) is assailed by forces that seek

Control and retribution.  And those forces seem to be winning.

Each day

I am diminished

Erased

Perhaps ministers don’t retire,

They simply run out of hope, love, peace, and joy

Sometimes nothing works

The mind shuts down

The words don’t come

The music dies

And you feel like you aren’t the kind of person

Who does anybody any good

And yet, and yet

For all this, hope remains.

There in the deep-down places

because we each have someplace within

in that place which makes us who we are

something sacred

something positive

something yes

It might not be very big

but as Jesus said,

if it is as big as a mustard seed, it will do

and if we can move to that place

live, even for a moment in that space

if we can tap into that love

that forgiveness

that hope

that peace

then we can be people who leak life energy

because then we are defined

by that love

by who and what we are for (not against)

In a world of “no”

We can live “yes”

It is Saturday night.

I will get up tomorrow and preach the good news, yes

And hopefully live it too, yes

And I will travel to a church with big questions

And try to be God’s yes

And I will look in the mirror

And say “yes”

I can do this

At least one more day

We need a leader

…Jesus is Lord meant – joyfully and defiantly - that Caesar wasn’t…[this three-word creed helped delineate]   the striking contrast between two competing kingdoms and their “Lords” – on who would gladly torture and kill to establish dominance via the Pax Romana and another who would willingly suffer and die to establish reconciliation via the Pax Christ.

          Albert Einstein

To lead people, walk beside them... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate. When the best leader's work is done, the people say, 'We did it ourselves!

And you can do what you want,

It is all about domination.

Winning

Controlling

Creating fear

Lies, violence, retribution

But no justice, no peace

No compassion

No love

No forgiveness

No sharing and caring

No sacrifice

No peace

The Prince of Peace made it clear

The one who emptied himself

Gave himself away

Sacrificed and died

Domination has nothing to do with the Kingdom of God.

We need a leader

Not a bully

We need a leader

Not an opportunist

We need a leader

Not someone whose only agenda

Is getting wealth and power

And getting his (or her) jollies

From making others hurt

The worst leaders make people hate

and create fear

Being empty and needy

They must constantly abuse power to feel alive

We know them

Mussolini, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao

Kim, Putin

And yes…

Jesus said the Kingdom of Heaven (God) is near

Within us

Jesus said the way to establish the Kingdom

Is through love, compassion, and reconciliation

Not hate, violence, and division

He said that greatness looks like

Giving one’s self away

Seeing the other as more important than the self

He said any other path is hellish.

Maybe it is time for us to change the paradigm

Not Make America Great Again (dominating)

But Make America giving again, gracious again

Maybe it is time

Not ready

It

Is not easy

To stop thinking ill

Of others

Usually one must enter into a friendship

With a person

Who has accomplished that great feat himself

Then

Something

Might start to rub off on you

Of that

True

Elegance

Sometimes

I am not ready to let go of my suspicions

That there is something evil

Lurking around every corner

I am not ready to believe

That maybe that person

Whose reality is different

Who sees the world and thinks about it

A different way

Than I

Might really

Be someone I need to listen to

Not just critically

But with curiosity

Where did that come from?

That belief?

That priority

That way of seeing the world?

What can I learn

For there is something to learn

From everyone

Sometimes I need to take a deep breath

And hold it

Until my body screams for oxygen

And then gasping

Takes in the fresh air

Sometimes my mind needs to slow down

And clean out the flotsam

So I can receive

Something new

I must make room

For the other

And let sit on the couch in my soul

And have a cup of tea

As we solve the problems of the world

Perhaps that person has something I need

I will never know

If I do not welcome them

Past the gate of my distrust and aversion

Perhaps I have something they need

That they will never hear

As long as we pound each other

With our opinions and our judgements

Jesus, maybe I need to sit down first with you

And listen as you tell me about grace

And love and forgiveness

As you deconstruct and reconstruct me.

Maybe then I can sit down at the table

As you did

With tax collectors and sinners,

And receive the gifts

They have to offer

me

maybe I need to let my better angels

who hang around in my soul

waiting for an opportunity

a chance to find the better angels

in the one I have defined as

enemy

Maybe I need to believe that there is

within all of us,

the capacity for goodness

and yes, reason

and that we can

as we sit around the table of grace

lessen the selfishness and fear

and find empathy and unity

I hear the voices that say

It will never be

I am willing, they are not

I will listen, they will not

But I will never know

If I don’t try

Maybe the problem is (at last partly) me

And if I should come to harm

Because I insist on love

If I should face ridicule and rejection

From all sides

Well

That, Jesus, would be something

You know a lot about

Time for a Cage Fight

At night, if I feel a divine loneliness

I tear the doors off Love’s mansion

And wrestle God onto the floor

He becomes so pleased with me

And says,

“Our hearts should do this more.”

          Hafiz via Daniel Ladinsky

We must face the fact that many different saviors can be smuggled in under the name “Jesus,” just as many different deities can be disguised under the term “god,” and vastly different ways of living can be promoted under the name “Christianity.”  Jesus can be a victim of identity theft, and people can say and do things in his name that he would never do.

When it comes to God

How do we behave?

Do we sit around in a parlor

Anointed with doilies, sipping Lady Gray

Engaged in polite conversation

Never straying into the unseemly or difficult?

Or

Is it time for an all-out rumble

A time for calling out (how long O Lord how long)

And being called out

Jesus is recorded as saying

κμν κα μες σύνετοί στε

He is talking to the disciples,

And is clearly frustrated.

In the King James Version, which tends to sanitise the Greek

to make it sound holier in English,

The words of Jesus are translated as,

Are you also still without understanding?

Even the New Revised Standard Version (updated) keeps this tone.

The New International Version translates it as

Are you still so dull?

But I like the way the Message puts it

Are you being willfully stupid?

Are we?

In another place, he calls the religious folk

Whited sepulchers

Painted tombs

Righteous on the outside

But rotten within

Part of our problem is that we love our comfort

We want to be in our safe zone

And so we define God, and then Jesus,

In a way that works for us,

Makes us “comfortable”

Sometimes that means we interpret God as

a King who dominates.  Who demands and punishes

Sometimes we make God ultimately irrelevant.

We make Jesus fire insurance,

Ignoring the call to be people who help the poor and fight injustice

He is just our ladder out of hell

It is not, perhaps, that we are stupid

As much as it is that God is beyond our understanding

Yes, Jesus, we are still without understanding!

And so we make shit up.

And when we come to stuff that doesn’t fit

The God, the Jesus we have created

We deflect, reinterpret, and avoid

What we need to do is wrestle.

Someone once said that “For every complex problem, there is a solution

And it is wrong.”

God wants engagement

God wants us to struggle with the big questions

Of right and wrong

(not legal and illegal, because some stuff that is legal is not right)

God wants us to struggle with his call

To be people of fierce love

What does that mean

When we are faced with people we want to hate

When we see people lying, hurting others, destroying the planet

How do we love our enemies?

What does that mean?  What does it look like, really?

It is time, perhaps, to move out of the parlor (pew?)

And meet God in some cage fighting

For perhaps there is really no other way.

To meet the One

Who wrestled with God

Chose to love all

And asks us to join him

in doing both

Who are you?

Some want to “recast Jesus as a limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in His hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes. In Revelation, Jesus is a prize fighter with a tattoo down His leg, a sword in His hand and the commitment to make someone bleed. That is a guy I can worship. I cannot worship the hippie, diaper, halo Christ because I cannot worship a guy I can beat up."

My Jesus can beat up your Jesus!

Mark Driscoll (as quoted by Brian McLaren in a New Kind of Christianity)

Who the heck are you, Jesus?

Are you a long-haired hippie freak?

Or the white supremacists due with a tattoo and an AR-15?

Are you the Republican or Democrat Jesus

Or the get-rich-quick Jesus

Or the “God hates you” Jesus

Or the nostalgic Jesus of my youth

The Jesus everyone (mostly) agreed on

Who blessed America

Thank you very much!!

Are you the Jesus of The Revelation, with eyes like fire

And a robe dipped in blood

Or the Christmas Jesus,

A tiny wrinkled soul baptized in amniotic fluid?

It matters Lord, a lot.

In my younger days,

A college student full of fervor

We used to sing

“Make me a servant, Lord, make me like You,

For you were a servant, Lord, make me one too.

Make me a servant, do what You must do,

To make me a servant, Lord make me like You”

But do I really accept you,

That incomprehensible human yet God

Servant yet Lord

Confusing as hell Jesus

Who says “follow me”

Who says “be like me”

I like you safe Jesus.

Nicely outlined

So I can color within the lines.

But you are messy

You came to stir things up

To create change

To change me

For this one small moment that I

Plod and trod across this planet

I will never figure you out,

And I am always in danger of getting it wrong

I fear getting it wrong

But I do know this

You are all humility, all peace

All love

You are also justice

and resistance and defiance

You embrace me and challenge me

You love me as I am and want me to be better

and you must be a little frustrated right now

by me

by us all

It must pain you to see us hate in your name

Promote violence in your name

Support and almost worship

Deeply flawed and divisive people

In your name

Lord, I don’t have you all figured out

But I have run into you

Time and time again

In odd and fearful places

In strange and troubled,

and wonderful people

I have experienced you

As a fire in my soul

A soft breeze upon my face

A longing in my heart

And I love you

And I need you

And I want to be a channel of your presence (and peace)

In this crazy, hate-filled, lie-soaked world

In Exile

We’re in a place of disruption and loss.  That is always the way God works in terms of creating something new.  The primary thing is to say to people, don’t panic about the sense of homelessness that you feel.  Don’t panic about the kind of bewilderment that you feel.  That can actually be a sign of grace.”

          Russell Moore

Christianity is a religion of exile, not domination.  Christianity is designed to be peculiar, not ordinary; counter-cultural, not consumerist.  “The church would be more faithful, more distinctly Christ’s people, if we actually understood that we don’t live in the promised land; we live in exile... what seems to define a great deal of the American church is fear… What if the crisis of this moment is actually a deep invitation to a new way of understanding our location? Our identity?.. Today, may we be faithful exiles.  For it’s that which will reveal the reality of the love of God who knows and sees people in exile, to restore and remake them to be the light and salt that can do as exiles what only we can do.”

Mark Labberton ( a friend and fellow Whitman grad and Presbyterian) quoted

By Jonathan Rauch in Cross Purposes.

________________________________________________

“This land is your land, this land is my land”

It may be

But it sure doesn’t feel like it.

I don’t feel like I am at home

I am surrounded not by paradise, but by

Wilderness

That place of dryness and danger

And endless nothing

I am surrounded by ICE and by blind hate

By deception and denial

By resentment, rage, and retribution

I feel like an exile!

Thank God

For God is doing a new thing!

And no

I can’t see it

Not yet, perhaps never

But I know

That even though right now

Good is bad and bad is good

Right now as people strive for dominance

Strive to oppress and minimize others

Right now, as injustice rolls like a mighty river

And fear like a never-ending spring

But I know

Even as I wander in exile

No longer recognizing the place (country) in which I live

That God is

That God is love

That God is present,

And that even though I feel

Lost and bewildered

Love is present, among us and in us

And love will win, eventually

We are in exile

But we do our best work in the wilderness

As we participate with God

In making a way

A highway for love, and righteousness, justice, and compassion

We must remember we are exiles.

For only then

Can we bring newness and love

Into this world

Only then can we keep moving

Toward home
