Welcome

Primitive religion is not believed, it is danced!

Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

Being found

“For most of my life, I have struggled to find God, to know God, to love God. I have tried hard to follow the guidelines of the spiritual life—pray always, work for others, read the Scriptures—and to avoid the many temptations to dissipate myself. I have failed many times but always tried again, even when I was close to despair.

Now I wonder whether I have sufficiently realized that during all this time God has been trying to find me, to know me, and to love me. The question is not “How am I to find God?” but “How am I to let myself be found by him?” The question is not “How am I to know God?” but “How am I to let myself be known by God?” And, finally, the question is not “How am I to love God?” but “How am I to let myself be loved by God?” God is looking into the distance for me, trying to find me, and longing to bring me home.”

Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming

how are we to be found?

as we blunder through each day

trying to make life happen

trying to find success, power, wealth, and love

seeking, manipulating, grasping

we are so busy

so occupied

that we fail to notice

the beauty underfoot

the truth when it is there, right in front of us

instead, we trample on the good

and create our own truth

blindly striving

trying to make it work

to make reality fit our preconceptions

we recreate the world

an alternative reality

we create God in our own image

and we become impervious

to truth and love

unable to find the way

and we subvert life

Lord, you seek us

You find us, every day

You meet us where we are

And say

Come home

Lord help us come to our senses

help us to quiet the noise

loosen our fists

open our hearts

that we might give you room

in our souls

to love us

and then secure in that love

let us be found

forgiven

loved

until our longing is satisfied

our fear allayed

and we can

quiet and reject the voices of hate and fear

that are within

that assail us from without

and embrace  the truth

and walk in your way

See the Sacred

Dear God, please reveal to us

Your Sublime

Beauty

That is everywhere, everywhere, everywhere

So that we will never again

Feel frightened

My divine love, my love

Please let us touch

Your face

Rumi per Daniel Ladinsky (Love Poems from God)

It is easier than we might think

to lose sight

of all that is sacred, all that is love,

as the planet burns

and foul people consolidate power

and plan evil

as we are besieged from every side

by hate and fear

we can no longer see

the divine

we are lost

stumbling, flailing and gasping

as those in the midst of a conflagration

where there is only flame

and smoke

and darkness

all is lost!

we cry

ah, dear ones

look up

where does our help come from?

who can rescue us from ourselves?

cannot the Power that created the mountains

that lifted them up

lift up you and me?

I gaze in awe at the mountain

after what now is

is no more

after we and our troubles

and those who consider power a thing to be grasped

have vanished from history

that mountain will still be there

soaring into the sky

and even if

“all the greed and corruption destroys

even a place like this

it will bide its time, heal, and be beautiful again,

whether we are here to see it or not”*

it is true!

it is undeniable

on the face of the mountain

in the eyes of a baby

in the wrinkles of an old soul

we can see

the face of God

This little light of mine

I believe the gospel itself… is primarily communicated by richly symbolic human lives that operate as prime attractors and exemplars: through actions visibly done in love; by a nonviolent, humble, simple, liberated lifestyle; by a happy identification with poor and excluded people; by obvious happiness itself; and by concrete and visible people who “give others reasons for spiritual joy”... When such people then speak or act, their words burn, and their actions convict!

I believe the gospel

do I?

I believe in Jesus

Lover, disturber, martyr

The one who said “Live like this”

But do I believe in the Christ

The ever-present presence

In me

Hope

There is so much that is anti-Christ

There are so many people, we can name them

Who lie and divide, and promote hate and chaos

But there are systems too.

Oppressive, foul, dishonest, cruel, greedy

Without empathy

They pull us back

These anti-Christs

Back into the darkness,

Back into fear, and hate, into obscene consumption

Into hoarding

Until we pile power and wealth around us

So that we do not implode into our own emptiness

They pull us away from Christ.

Who draws all to himself

All to compassion and service

To truth

And love

They have power!!!

But

Are we powerless?

Do we not contain all that is holy and good

Does it not roar through our souls like wind and fire

Like flame driven by a Santa Ana wind?

Changing us forever

Can we not so live

Like the saints and the mystics

and draw people forward

Into the light?

People are drawn to the light.

There may be people who are anti-Christ

But we are Christ’s presence

We are the light of the world

And now more than ever

We have to shine

The Kingdom

the Kingdom of God

the Kingdom of Heaven

the Kingdom is near

at hand

within reach

it is the treasure we reach for

rather than hope for

it is the reality we live into being

we think we understand kingdom

kingdoms come through power

they conquer

and dominate and control

they are willing to do anything to grow

anything

others

brutality is a tool

intimidation and humiliation too

making others less

marginalizing and minimizing

expelling, eradicating

I am thinking of kingdoms today

the kingdom of earth

the kingdom of America

ruled by shaped by

what?

not God

not love, justice, and joy

we see the kingdom of earth personified

in one swathed in scandal

unrestrained, unaccountable

one with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket

and what he can put over on a kingdom

of the angry and resentful

the fearful

who embrace and cheer

Thy kingdom come!

what can I do today

how can I reach out and help pull it into being

that kingdom shaped by self-giving and sacrifice

through compassion and reconciliation

a kingdom that seeks to serve

protect all (all)

on this day when the Kingdom of Love

seems out of reach

fading, disintegrating beneath the weight

of hate and ego

let us reach for the kingdom,

and each other

We will not break

We may bend but we will not break. We may struggle but we will not surrender. We are the family of hope. We are people from around the world who believe in a peaceful future for the Earth and all her children. We value love and practice justice. We are keepers of a promise made long ago. We are the unexpected change that many have prayed to see.

          Steven Charleston

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you,

    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;

when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,

and the flame shall not consume you.

          Isaiah 43:2

Hate and fear

Roaring, driven by the wind

It has created

The fires rage

Where do we go when the floods come?

How do we escape the fire?

We seek a hiding place, where we can be safe

A rock on which to stand

But sometimes we cannot hide.

And underfoot is nothing but sinking sand

We will pass through the waters

We will be burned

Sacred dwells in us

We believe (help our unbelief)

Are salt flavoring

We are yeast, changing

We are overcomers

Choosing Herod

“Soon earth will cover us all. Then in time earth, too, will change; later, what issues from this change will itself in turn incessantly change, and so again will all that then takes its place, even unto the world's end. to let the mind dwell on these swiftly rolling billows of change and transformation is to know a contempt for all things mortal.”

          Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Like an intrusive guest

It has made itself at home

Taking up space in head and heart

It is like a needy child

Pestering me for attention

Relentless and intrusive

The fear that we have made a mistake.

And have chosen values and priorities

And thus leadership

That will take us to dark places

I keep thinking of Herod

The great builder

The guy who melted down his treasury to feed the people

The guy who killed children

Poor fear-determined Herod

King Herod, until Jesus comes along

The moment the prophecy is read

“From you, Bethlehem shall come….”

King Herod becomes

Just

Herod

If Jesus were king, the Herod could not be

And Herod loses it!

And that becomes the story of his life.

Then there was Herod Herod’s son.

The Herod of Jesus’ death

Who mocked his kingship

Who (along with Pilate) had the power of life and death

Over this One from Nazareth

If Herod were king, then Jesus could not be

The son accomplished what the father did not

It matters who leads us.

Who we have put in power

There can only be one

One

No one can serve two masters

The choice of one master excludes the other

We cannot serve God and money

Possessions, fame,

Status, power

Retribution

And God

We either choose the way of the world

Or we choose the way of God

We choose Herod or Jesus

So, have we chosen poorly?

Perhaps the true question is this.

If we give power to a person

Whose values, attitudes, and behaviors are antithetical to Jesus,

If we place them in the seat of power,

Have we deposed Jesus?

And what is the consequence of doing this?

Herod killed children

His son killed John the Baptist, and later

He was an accomplice in the death of Jesus.

What happens when we give power to one

who is not merely “other” than Jesus

but seems to be, profoundly,

the opposite of Jesus?

What happens?

Can God use that person?

Maybe?

Will the price of eggs drop?

Will we be safer?

Will the economy soar?

But what happens to our souls,

And ultimately

To our world?

To us?

But more importantly, what happens to

The poor, the vulnerable?

The ill and the elderly?

The children?

Those blessed and prized by God?

I do not know the future.

I cannot say with certainty what will happen.

And maybe I have it all wrong.

But on this day I am anxious

I know change happens

I know rulers come and go

I hear the words attributed to Gandhi

When I despair, I remember that all through history,

the ways of truth and love have always won.

There have been tyrants and murderers,

and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall.

Think of it — always.".

I think of it

And I believe in Love (and that love wins)

And yet I know the pain and destruction

Which pave the path to new beginnings

So “Lord, I believe;

help my unbelief!"

What kind of world do we create?

We get the kind of world we ourselves create by our faith.  Change the faith, change the assumptions, and the perceptions will change.  Change the perceptions and the attitudes will change.  Change the attitudes and the actions will change.  Change your faith and you will get a new world.  Get rid of the notion of measuring deserts.  Replace it ith generous unconditional love…  Feel absolutely safe with God who loves us into being and sustains us always

There is not enough they tell us.

Not enough money

Not enough food

Not enough power

Not enough housing

This is a world of scarcity

Everyone is competing

This is a world of “us” and ‘them”

“They” are outsiders and aliens

“They” are threats

So we must fear them, hate them

Control them, subdue them

Ah, fear

It is so powerful

It causes us to grasp and horde

To put up walls

Buy guns

Attack nations

And hate.  Yes, fear leads to hate

It is so useful for those who would

Dominate and control

But God says “Be not afraid.”

Trust in God.  Trust in GodWithUs

Trust that God is within us

Us

All of us

Trust that there is not scarcity but abundance

There is enough of God’s love for all

There is enough air, water, land, food

There is enough power

For everyone to have

Enough

Enough to flourish

To live

To find peace, hope and joy

If we understand that we have abundance

Which can be shared

Which must be shared

For earth to be heaven

God is in us

We are in God

We are all bound together at the deepest level

Community, communion, union

We do not have to be afraid

(although we often are. At least I am)

We do not have to create a world of scarcity

Hostility and insecurity

We can create a different world

As we define our world and ourselves

From the perspective of abundance not deficiency

As we understand, and have faith that we are

Absolutely loved by God

And then manifest that love

Live that love

And let Love cast out fear

Day One

“Hope does not mean that our protests will suddenly awaken the dead consciences, the atrophied souls, of the plutocrats running Halliburton, Goldman Sachs, Exxon Mobil or the government.

Hope does not mean we will reform Wall Street swindlers and speculators.

Hope does not mean that the nation’s ministers and rabbis, who know the words of the great Hebrew prophets, will leave their houses of worship to practice the religious beliefs they preach. Most clerics like fine, abstract words about justice and full collection plates, but know little of real hope.

Hope knows that unless we physically defy government control we are complicit in the violence of the state. All who resist keep hope alive. All who succumb to fear, despair and apathy become enemies of hope.

Hope has a cost. Hope is not comfortable or easy. Hope requires personal risk. Hope does not come with the right attitude. Hope is not about peace of mind. Hope is an action. Hope is doing something.

Day one

2025

Death in New Orleans

Death in Vegas

Oregon clobbered in the Rose Bowl

Twenty days until Trump (Musk) takes control

A day without sun

Gray, no snow

Winter at its worst

How do we hope when there is no hope

When evil wins

Love loses

And Jesus is coopted by Herod

How could we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? (Psalm 137)

How?

How do I wake up tomorrow

And rise with joy and expectation

How do I walk out this door

And into the doors of people hurting

How do I slip into the pulpit

And say words of hope?

How do I

Find the peace that passes all understanding

Because I do not understand

Or rather I do understand

That God is not going to save us from ourselves.

What I understand is that we are called to be

Who we really are

Salt

People whose very presence changes the world

Jesus said we are salt

“We are that which enhances or embitters, soothes or irritates, melts or stings,

preserves or ruins.

For better or for worse, we are the salt of the earth” Rohr

Its tricky

Salt fails when it dominates.

“Instead of eliciting goodness, it destroys the rich potential all around it. Salt poured out without discretion leaves a burnt, bitter sensation in its wake.

It ruins what it tries to enhance. It repels”  Rohr

But salt fails when it loses its saltiness

It also fails when it is not in the mix

We cannot withdraw

We cannot be silent

But

We don’t want to imbitter, reject, repel

We want to flavor and savor

With love

How to be salt?

I don’t know

How to influence but not repel

Savor but not ruin

I only know

I enter this year with anxiety

Evil seems to have won

Hate has trumped love

Control has replaced compassion

“The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.”  Yeats

So I enter this year

With little hope

But knowing that I must embrace hope against hope

But not doing it well.

How about you?

What does God want?

“I won’t take no for an answer,”

God began to say

to me

when He opened His arms each night

wanting us to

dance

_____________________________________

what does God want from me?

the question haunts

each

step

as I plod through each day

seeking answers

ah, for certitude

to know,

to know that I am good

with

God

to know I am becoming, me

and then the answer comes

“I want you to stop worrying!

all I want is your love

all I want is for us to dance

through life.

all I want is for you

to know you are loved

as you wallow

in the questions

you don’t need all the answers

just be loved

just love

period.”

and thus my New Year’s Resolution for this year

receive love, accept love

nurture love

give love

no more, no less

that is all

that is enough

Be A Gift

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that those who live the Beatitudes will be “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). What does he mean by such an image?

First of all, he’s not saying that those who live this way are going to heaven. He is saying that they will be a certain kind of gift for the earth. What a misinterpretation has been handed on, again and again! We think of Jesus’ teaching as a set of prescriptions for getting to heaven (even though we haven’t followed them). No, the Sermon on the Mount and especially the Beatitudes are a set of descriptions of a free life.

When we can weep, when we can identify with the little ones, when we can make peace, when we can be persecuted and still be joyful—then we are doing it right. He’s saying this is what holiness will look like. When we act this way, “the reign of God is among you” (Luke 17:21).

I have a dream

The dreamer said

That we will be free, free at last

Free to?

Free from?

Free to be?

Free to control?

Free from pain and despair

Free to be

              What?

                              Powerful? Rich? Dominant?

Perhaps the critical question is this

To what are we bound?

What controls, traps, and limits us?

From what do we need to be set free?

A need for power?

Fear?

              Hate? Bias?

                             Greed?

Perhaps when we are free

We step away from the self

To find the self

We are free (and blessed) when we can let go

              Of all those standard definitions

                             Of greatness, freedom, safety, blessing

And engaged the world in a new way

We are free when we can weep,

              identify with the little ones

                             exchange power for servanthood

ache for equity, equality and justice

When we can embrace

              the poor and the mournful

                             the oppressed and excluded

This makes us salty, the spice of the earth

It makes us yeast, the leaven of the world

People who bend the arc of the universe

Toward love

People and places unexpected

It is often said at Christmastime that Jesus is born into every family and every heart. But these “births” must not make us forget the primordial, massive fact that Jesus was born of Mary among a people that at the time were dominated by the greatest empire of the age. If we forget that fact, the birth of Jesus becomes an abstraction, a symbol, a cipher.… To the eyes of Christians, the incarnation is the irruption of God into human history: an incarnation into littleness and service in the midst of the overbearing power exercised by the mighty of this world; an irruption that smells of the stable….

Gustavo Gutiérrez The God of Life, trans. Matthew J. O’Connell (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 1991), 85.

___________________________

Jesus is Born!

Emmanuel is here!

The Word has become flesh and dwells among us.

But where do we find him?

This one who came to bring down the mighty

And lift up the poor?

Where does he abide?

Where is he to be found?

It is not enough to say he dwells in human hearts.

That he “tents” in our souls

A reoccurring incarnation

When God came he came into history, into Palestine

Into a land of oppression and poverty

Into the pain and  miseries of humankind

If he were to incarnate today, where would he be born?

Not in places of power and wealth

Not this one

Who chose not Jerusalem but Bethlehem

Not a palace but a barn

Perhaps he would arrive in Bethlehem again

Where walled in, oppressed, and poor people

struggle to survive

Perhaps he would be born in a doorway

On a cold and rain-swept street In America

Or in the rubble of a home in Ukraine or Gaza

Anywhere there is loss and pain, oppression and violence

Jesus came to be God with us

He came to be an irruption and a disruption

To break down the systems of power and wealth

Oppression and suppression

Jesus’ place is with those very people the world would discard

The poor.  The powerless.  The “different.” The addicted and afflicted.

If we would worship him,

We must worship him there

In places and people unexpected

We do not take Jesus there (as we sometimes think)

We are taken there by the Christ in us

To love, and honor

The Word

Incarnate in unexpected people

Adoring him, like the Magi

And offering gifts

Of Compassion, Kindness, and Forgiveness

And receiving back

The precious gift that is the child

Born under a wandering star

It is a door set open

I am Adventing

“And in despair, I bowed my head;

"There is no peace on earth," I said;

"For hate is strong,

And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!

The Wrong shall fail,

the Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good will to men!”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

__________________________________________________

Today I am adventing

On this longest night

I want to be Christmasing, but I am not

I am not immersed in Christmas

Where miracles happen

And love wins

It matters not how many Christmas movies are seen

Or carols sung

We are not to Christmas yet

The days are short, the nights so long

Gray clouds press to the grounds

And the air is heavy with the tears of God

Wars still rage

Malignant powers still oppress,

People with hearts of stone still sacrifice the common good

For wealth and power

Liars still lie

No, I am not Christmasing

I am adventing

I am walking in that dark impatient time

Where resolution is yet to come

My soul resonates with the poet

Who, beloved wife burned to death,

Beloved son wounded by war,

Country divided,

Bowed his head

In momentary despair.

And I too cry "There is no peace on earth,

For hate is strong, And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Not I am not Christmasing

I am Adventing

I am plodding toward Bethlehem in the darkness

and the cold

And yet

I do believe Christmas will come

I do believe that love will prevail

For Sacred comes, and comes, and comes again

God is always incarnating into this world

We do not have a God who is scarce

But a God who is present

A scarce God demands exclusion

A scarce God stays aloof, judging

And handing out retribution,

And mercy and blessing when they come,

Are portioned out meagerly to the worthy

But a present God, one who incarnates

in all creation

in all people

in all hearts

in us

Ah!  that is the point of Christmas

But incarnation (Christmas) demands that we show up!

“Who among us will celebrate Christmas correctly? Whoever finally lays down all power, all honor, all reputation, all vanity, all arrogance, all individualism beside the manger; whoever remains lowly and lets God alone be high; whoever looks at the child in the manger and sees the glory of God precisely in his lowliness” (Bonhoeffer)

If we want Christmas

We will have to show up, not in the halls of power

Not in the Capital or the White House

Posing for pictures with the mighty

But in the streets

With the homeless

At the border, with the caged

in the hospital, with the cancer patient

in the nursing home, with the lonely woman or man

whose children cannot come

If we want Christmas

We will have to fight for it

Not with the weapons of hate

But with the weapons of love

We fight for Christmas

When we feed the poor

When we fight for housing, first

When we welcome the homeless to sleep in our pews

When we wear a mask, and get vaccinated

When we fight systematic racism

When we think of the common good, and not just ourselves

We fight for Christmas when we seek unity and peace

And refuse to demonize, refuse to hate, refuse to exclude

Call me a fool (many do)

Call me naïve

But even while I am adventing

And stumbling my way through the dark

I believe the light will come

And with Longfellow I affirm

God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!

The Wrong shall fail,

the Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Be a light

Be a light in the darkness

Be a light

Be

If only I could

But it is not so easy to be the light

In a world that embraces darkness

It is not easy to be light

When people condemn you for shining light

In the dark places

And call you divisive

A hater

Gaslighting kills light

And so one sits in the darkness

Flickering

The light barely alive

While the darkness grows and grows

Gaining power through lies

And abusive power

And wealth

While darkness sits in the halls of power

In the courts of justice

While the greedy and abusive win

While the people of the lie (Scott Peck)

Call good evil, and evil good

And up down, and down up

The children of darkness abandon and vilify

The homeless

The immigrant

The poor

Those souls so foolish

As to not be rich, and powerful

One cannot help but remember the words of the prophets

Who also saw times like this

“Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds!

At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.

They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them.

They defraud people, rob them

Therefore, the Lord says:

I am planning disaster against this people”  (Micah)

Dare we believe that our helplessness is not definitive?

That their unchecked power is not definitive?

That there is a higher law

A deeper truth

That will turn the darkness against itself

Until it cracks

And once again, the light leaks in

Can we continue to be light until then

Can the light of love, and hope

Peace and joy keep burning

Through the long night

Perhaps I will never see

the time when light returns

Perhaps our world, our country

Will continue to slide into the abyss

It has happened so many times

Yes, resurrection has happened

A new thing has been birthed, time and time again,

But only after destruction

Only after all is gone

And nothing is left but rubble

But still

We can, perhaps hope

We can be people with soft fronts

Refusing to live in hate

We can be people with strong backs

Refusing to accept quietly

The lies, the hate, the injustice

Refusing to let people silence us

By making us the haters, when we call out hate

Making us divisive when we call out the lies

We are all too eager to let them

Gaslight us

And silence us

Because we care, it matters

We want to be fair. We have our doubts

We want to be people of grace

Is there still hope?

can we live in a way that keeps the light alive

Even as we die

Are silenced and suffocated

Perhaps we can keep burning

And perhaps

Even if our light goes out

We will have lit the flame in another

Perhaps

Perhaps we who are losing our will to burn

Can still be a light for others

Perhaps

But at this point?

I am no longer sure

Compassion is resistance

“Compassion constitutes a radical form of criticism, for it announces that the hurt is to be taken seriously, that the hurt is not to be accepted as normal and natural but is an abnormal and unacceptable condition for humanness.”

              Walter Brueggemann

Ah Lord

May I call you that?

I am crushed, sickened.

I am soiled

As if I have trod through the ooze and slime

And old decay (CS Lewis)

Of human greed, and megalomania

Of anger turned to enmity

Worry turned to hopelessness

I feel like I no longer see a way forward

Through the dumpster fire of

Resentment, envy, and discontent

It feels like hate has won

Voted into power, dominating and retributive

As if the world is spinning apart

its heart breaking

the center, the core

Of decency, morality, truth,

disintegrating

Until good is evil, and evil is good

Truths are deemed lies, and lies are accepted as truths

Justice is deferred and denied

Equity is a joke, and

Equality is a threat to be assailed

We have handed ourselves over

To fools

To people who would manipulate, misinform, and destroy

Gloom permeates the air

Like a winter fog

I want to lash out

But how does one hit fog?

Blows are useless

I try to speak the truth in love

But the love seems to be missing

And my words, my passionate writings

My earnest pleas

My kind words, my angry words

My measured words, my bitter words

Do nothing (Good)

What can I do, Lord?

How do I resist?

Perhaps there is a lesson

To be learned from your quiet entry into the world

A lesson to be learned from your living

And your dying

Your refusal to answer hate with hate

Violence with violence

Domination with domination

Perhaps the answer is to found

In your compassion

For all people

No matter who they were, or what they had done

No matter what lies they had believed

Or choices they made

Even when they chose a thief, a killer

Over you

You remained compassionate

I think the lesson is there Lord

Compassion is resistance.

Resistance to the darkness.

Resistance to all the things that hurt, and divide.

Compassion is a radical form of criticism,

It insists that hurt, in whatever form it comes

Is not acceptable

That greed and abuse are abnormal

That injustice must be taken seriously

But compassion is also a strategy

It is what leads us to feed the hungry,

clothe the naked,

fight for justice

protect the vulnerable

welcome the stranger

Lord

Wash the anger, confusion, and resentment

From my soul

Fill me with love and compassion

In your tender mercy, come like the rising sun

Shine on us, living in this darkness

In the shadow of death

And guide our feet into the path of peace  (Luke 1)

Lean in

One must push deeper and deeper into Jesus, and let him illuminate deeper and deeper levels of reality within oneself… We are to feel ourselves transparent so that this light of the Source can shine through us… We simply open ourselves and let our whole awareness be of God’s life in and through us to whatever work or expression of divine beauty and goodness is.

              Beatrice Bruteau – Radical Optimism

Jesus was full of the Sacred

Stuffed with Love

We barely know how to talk about it

So we write creeds

Trying to put on paper that which cannot be contained

What we do know

Is that the love and power of God flowed through Jesus

And those who got near to him

Those who touched him

Were touched back

Like when woman on the road, barely touched his robe!

Jesus said, “Someone touched me. I know power has gone out of me.”

Jesus was

Transparent

All that is Holy shone in him, and through him

Into the world, and into those precious souls

Who gathered around him

And as he was preparing to go home

He prayed that those who love him

Might be with him where he is

That is not just about our homecoming

That is about our living

We are called to be people

Filled with the Sacred

Full of love

Not so we can hang onto that love

But so that it can flow through us

Into a hurting world

Flow from the heart of Jesus

To our heart

To the hearts of those whose lives touch ours

Jesus was an expression of God’s beauty and goodness

Us too

We are to “be Jesus”

The ongoing incarnation

We are to have the outlook of Jesus

We are to see with his eyes

And feel with this heart

And we are to practice radical compassion

Fierce love

We are to share his

“care, his concern, his will to heal” (Bruteau)

Our walk with God is not about dominating or controlling

Protecting or coercing

It is about compassion

And healing

In Advent we prepare for Christ’s coming

But Christ has already come

And Christ has never stopped arriving

As he incarnates in our hearts

And shines through our lives

May we fall deeper and deeper into Christ

May we lean back

Into that reality that is the Source

Drawing closer and closer to Jesus

Until we are consumed

Until we not only lean into Christ

But lean into each other

All of us

Meeting at the heart of Jesus

The same kind of motley transformed crowd

That met in a stable

Under the light of a star

Believe in the Light

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

                             John

___________________________________________________________

It feels so heavy

this darkness which seems to creep

across this planet

It presses down upon me

Bowing my back

Pressing me down to my knees

Where I can only lament

Out of the darkness I hear the voices

Of those demonized and threatened

Those whom Empire has deemed less-than-human

Immigrants threatened with deportation

Queer people who are demonized and minimized

Trans people who are told they should not exist, who are deluged with hate,

and whose existence is threatened.

I hear the voices of the poor,

who are getting poorer as wealth trickles up

and of those for whom there is, no longer,

any justice

I hear what sounds like rain

But is perhaps

The tears of Jesus falling

As he weeps over this world

As he wept over Jerusalem

Weeping because we do not see

Do not hear

Do not love

Do not serve

Because we walk down the path toward domination and wealth,

Instead of the path to the heart of Jesus

To that place where compassion, and service,

generosity and mercy, humility and love

are embraced and lived.

It seems so dense, so pervasive

This darkness

Impenetrable, overwhelming

And yet

And yet

Jesus comes, and comes, and comes again

A light shining in the darkness,

And even as the darkness crushes us to the earth

and so much that is good, dies, and is buried,

we affirm that the darkness has not overcome the light

We affirm that it still shines

We confess that often we struggle to believe

And that all too often we choose poorly

We lament that we do not recognize Jesus when he comes

Embodied in the immigrant,

The poor and the elderly,

In all those we degrade and discard.

We admit that all too often we do not receive

The One who comes

And slide into our own darkness of anger and hate

despair and hloplessness

And yet

The light is not overcome

We must remember that good can indeed come into the darkness

And transform it

“...new life starts in the dark. Whether it is a seed in the ground,

a baby in the womb, or Jesus in the tomb, it starts in the dark.” (Barbara Brown Taylor)

In this dense darkness I can barely stand

My feet are heavy, and the way is hidden

But I believe in the light.

I believe God when God says,

“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” (Isaiah 42:16)

I affirm the song of Zechariah,

“Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79)

The Word has come and has made his dwelling among us

The light, even now shines in the darkness

And when we hear, and see,

When we are awake to the presence

We become the children of God

Light bearers

Who live love and compassion, generosity and kindness

Who shine like stars in the world (Philippians 2)
