Welcome

Primitive religion is not believed, it is danced!

And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

Your choice

You carry

All the ingredients

To turn your life into a nightmare

Don’t mix them…

You carry all the ingredients

To turn your existence into joy,

Mix them, mix

Them!

We are not helpless

Ever

We do not have to be tossed and blown

By every new headline

Every painful setback

Every new abuse of power

Every new lie (Ephesians 4)

We can be victims

If we want

We can carry darkness

Embrace ignorance

We can harden our hearts

So there is no longer room

For The Gift

The Presence

We can stuff our souls with resentment,

Anger, hate, and greed

We can lust for power

We can spawn nightmares,

Which fill our souls with darkness and chaos

Pushing us to punish, harm, and reject

Which fill our lives

With every kind of violence

Imaginable

But all the ingredients are there

For joy

Love, compassion, forgiveness, generosity

Fueled by the Spirit

Can intoxicate us

Until we dance with abandon

Our feet moving to the sound of

Gratitude and expectation

Our hearts singing the song of love

Our eyes seeing all the good gifts

That surround us

Until we live joy

We carry within us

All the ingredients we need

Mix them!  Mix them!

Beyond rage

Prophets who continue to lead (or end) with their rage have only half of the message, it seems.  They have the anger but lack the compassion; mere moral positioning and ethical “answers” are not really the work of conversion… In our times, it is common to confuse articulate passion with prophetic when it is simply untransformed anger that will not change anything in the long term or lead us anywhere good.

Any opinion, liberal or conservative, might well be a good one, but what is its guiding energy and end point?

Richard Rohr, The Tears of Things

___________________________________________

Sometimes I live in a cloud of rage

Each morning I stare out over the devastation

That is America.

I see power abused,

Wealth mistaken for worthiness

Injustice paraded as justice

I see the victims

their lives torn asunder by

racism and hate

their pain ignored

their very being canceled

and I am angry

And so I scream to the heavens

“God, do something!”

My fingers type out fury

Awash with righteous wrath

I proclaim my disgust with articulate passion

I am, I hope, a truth teller

But where, oh where, is compassion?

I am Jonah, furious that grace and love might fall upon

The objects of my anger

Sulking under a tree at the very thought

That they might be redeemed

I have left no room for compassion

Redemption

Reconciliation

I need to be right

I need to put those “sinners” in their place

I want to see them fall and be humiliated

Alas

God will not join us in that place

Yes!

We need to speak out!

Against injustice and inequity

Yes, we need to act to counter

The works of evil

We need to feed the hungry, clothe the naked

House the homeless,

Welcome the stranger

Fight for justice.

But we must let our God of love

Be Love

We cannot get lost in rage

Ours is a ministry of reconciliation

We cannot allow our frustration and anger

To kill our capacity

To feel the pain and emptiness

The lostness of the oppressors

God does not love any of us because we are good (or right)

God loves us, all of us, because God is good

The God of love is big enough to never give up

On anyone

To never quit seeking, reconciliation and renewal

I do not know how to balance my anger at injustice

And my disdain for the distributors of cruelty

With that unfathomable love

We must go beyond

Our inadequate views of mercy

And let God be God

Or else we will lose our capacity

To sing a redemption song

And that is all we really have

Fear

Fear is the cheapest room in the house.

I would like to see you living

In better conditions…

I should not make any promises right now,

But I know that if you

Pray

Somewhere in this world

Something good will happen.

God wants to see

More love and playfulness in your eyes

For that is your greatest witness to him…

                     Hafiz ala Daniel Landinsky

When we live in fear

We live in the poorest part of the soul

That impoverished place

Where hate and anger, resentment and cruelty dwell

We live in the squalor of our own garbage

Our insecurities,

Our failures

Our lack of hope, and love, and joy

There are those who would exile us there

In that foul place

Who would use power and wealth

To oppress our hearts

And leave us stumbling and broken.

Into dark and dirty streets

There is only one way out.

Only one

Love

Love not as feeling

Nor as some sort of chemical connection

But the love that comes from Love

From that one who is love

And who pours love into our souls

Bringing light and joy

Into the dark corners

So let us trust in love.

Have faith in its power.

And dance freely along

Streams of cool water that refresh our souls

Let us lift our voices in song and prayer.

For love and joy

Are our greatest witness

Looking for mischief

God, what love mischief can “we” do

For the world

Today

          Hafiz /Daniel Ladinsky

“What can you do to get into good trouble? There is a light inside of you that will turn on when you get into good trouble. You will feel emboldened and freed. You will realize that unjust laws cannot stop you. These laws cannot stop the truth that is in your heart and soul.”

John Lewis, Carry On: Reflections for a New Generation

Birthing the Sacred

If you want, the Virgin will come walking down the street

Pregnant with the Holy and say

I need shelter for the night, please take me inside your heart

My time is so near

Then under the roof of your soul you will witness the sublime

Intimacy, the divine, the Christ

Taking birth

Forever

As she grasps your hand for help, for each of us

Is the midwife of God, each of us

and life-giving

the fire of fierce love

and quench it

to take the powerful wind of the spirit

and reduce it

We can

It is possible

Or

we can birth the Sacred

allowing that which permeates us

Back to the Garden

His hands can shape through ours

And our sounds can somehow echo what God has ever

said…

His mind can shape through ours

Our bodies – and the earth – are like clay. Is

that not so, my

dear

Ah dear children

“We are stardust, we are golden”

We are salt, we are yeast, we are light

Make no mistake

For all our fear, for all our greed

Despite our flawed belief

That life is an endevour we must undertake

Alone

We are instruments the Sacred

Clay to be formed

Vessels built to contain

Love

We are the hands and feet of God

We are the voice crying in the wilderness

“you are loved”

It is a matter of clinging

to Jesus as a vine clings to a branch

let the life force flow

through us

Separated

we become dry and brittle creatures

dry branches trodden underfoot

by the powers of the world

Detached we are

Tossed and blown

Deceived

But we can cling to God

Knowing that God clings to us

It is there, deep down

At the center of who we are

The presence, the spark,

the power and love

that permeates us

transforming

restoring the image

until love is the natural expression

of who we are

and we join the sun, and the moon

and the stars

and all creation

in proclaiming the glory

and love

of God

and we transform rather than

conform

bringing a little bit of heaven

to earth

leading the way back

to the garden

So I sit.....

And with every step I took it became more impossible for me to turn back. And my mind was empty—or it was as though my mind had become one enormous, anaesthetized wound. I thought only, One day I'll weep for this. One of these days I'll start to cry.

 James Baldwin, Giovanni's Room

___________________________________________

I sit and stare blankly at the screen

my mind is empty, my hands are still

I do not know how long I have been sitting this way

My mind, heart, soul

An anaesthetized wound

I am preoccupied with the chaos

love is losing

Empire, replete with its trappings of fear, control, and cruelty

Is winning

My soul is assailed by evil and greed

By the callous disregard for people

That tears at the very fabric of who I am

I move from anger to disgust

From fear to (yes, I admit it) hate

From shock to sadness to profound grief

It is bad enough that people in power abuse it

That people with privilege exploit it

It is bad enough that people do ungodly things

In the name of God

But what shatters me is that so many do not care

I wonder if this is how the disciples felt that Saturday morning

After it was all over

after the political and religious systems

did their thing

and killed love

hung compassion on a cross

what must it have been like to sit there in that upper room

where only days before

the space had echoed with laughter

and bread was broken

and a cup passed round, again and again

what must it have been like to sit there

your heart ripped from your body

while outside

the Roman soldiers prowl and harass

and the people of Jerusalem

simply open their shops

buy their groceries

and go about their day

as if nothing has happened?

As the people walk the street, cowed and silenced by the soldiers

a conquered people who have capitulated to power

and live in fear

it feels so hopeless

I feel so helpless

As if there is nothing I can do

But I cannot just sit here

hoping it will all go away

hoping that people will wake up to the Sacred

hoping against hope

I know there are no easy answers

I know that Sacred seems distant and unconcerned

and lament is now a way of life

But still, I must stand

And I must go through each day

Left foot,

Right foot

Left foot breathe

Trusting in the Sacred,

Trusting God, GodWithUs, GodInUs

Trusting enough to leave those places of safety

to stand in the street, facing the fierce gusts of hate

and speak about justice, as justice is denied

and when those with power us it hatefully

live love

I must stand, because I know, on this Saturday

Something the disciples did not know, yet

I know about the resurrection

I know what God did

And I know

What God can do

And so I sit

But not for long

An outpouring of Love

The crucifixion of Jesus is the preeminent example of God’s love reaching out to us. It is at the same moment the worst and best thing in human history. The Franciscans, led by John Duns Scotus, even claimed that instead of a “necessary sacrifice,” the cross was a freely chosen revelation of total love on God’s part.

In so doing, they reversed the engines of almost all world religion up to that point, which assumed that we had to spill blood to get to a distant and demanding God. On the cross, the Franciscans believed, God was “spilling blood” to reach out to us! This is a sea change in consciousness. The cross, instead of being a transaction, was seen as a dramatic demonstration of God’s outpouring love, meant to utterly shock the heart and turn it back toward trust and love of the Creator.

It is an age of horrors

With hate sitting in high places

People snatched off the streets

and “disappeared”

A time when racism is flaunted

compassion is a sin

and justice is denied

The air is thick with free-floating anger,

resentment, and feel

we are choking on our own bitterness

We want to claw our way

out of this dark, brooding place

we are desperate

for one clean breath of love

we are tired of stumbling in this sullen gloom

we want to once again walk in the light

Jesus of the cross

You know our pain

It is your pain

What assails us put you there

hanging on that tree

looking down at a world

that cried out for deliverance

You suffered to deliver

not to deliver us from suffering

but to teach us how to live with suffering

the poor will be with us always

so too the tyrants

the small, bitter souls that delight

in the pain of others

there were those who stood underneath your cross

delighted

there were more who simply turned away

overwhelmed by their own pain

unable to bear anymore

unable to see and feel the pain

oozing from the very earth

which cried out in its travail and shook when you died

but you bore it all

and in your near silence

you preached love

Yes, love

because only one thing has power completely

and that is love

Love seeks not power, or wealth

Love seeks not control or retribution

True love is freely given

and in that freedom is its power

it does not need

anything

love not seeking

can give

love not protecting can reach out

from the dawn of time

we human creatures have misunderstood

how You work

we have seen you as distant and demanding

and we have sought you out of fear

in fear

we have spilled blood on innumerable altars

and endless battlefields

seeking to please You

hoping to find favor and blessing

We have killed in your name

doves, and lambs, and fatted calves

and children

your beloved children

but in Jesus

in Jesus on the cross

you revealed your limitless love

from the cross You love poured out

like blood pouring from a pierced body

the cross is an insult

it shocks us, confuses us

and it changes us

we cannot describe a love such as this

but we can see it, experience it, accept it.

we can let love come to us

and freely, joyously, sacrificially

not only return it

but pass it on

Heart Trouble

And God is always there, if you feel wounded. He kneels

Over this earth like

A divine medic

And His love thaws

The holy in

Us

          St Teresa of Avila

__________________________

I know it still beats.

It must

For this morning, I watched the sun rise

Sneaking its way into the sky

Cloud dodging

Unable to hide its grandeur

pink, red, orange

traces

revealing its path

I think I felt my heart twinge

just for a moment

But I have heart trouble.

There is a pain, deep-seated, there in that space

where one is heart and soul

In that place where compassion

grows and flows

outward

where true joy is birthed

hope leaps unbound

love is born

We are bone and marrow

Sinew, blood, and flesh

Black, white, every color of the rainbow

We are unique, diverse beings

Emerging from the wildly creative power

From which all things come

Dualistic definitions cannot capture us

we cannot even find the words

that honor

the complex splendour

that is you and me

And so the devastation

of a frozen heart

hardened by the hate, fear, and greed

free floating

coarsened by daily terrors

as our world slides into the abyss

the darkness

of injustice, abuse, and cruelty

even the brilliance of the sun

the breathtaking beauty of the mountains

white capped

the azure sky

the ecstatic fawns dancing

across fields newly green

cannot soften this heart

frozen by the hate and injustice

but I want to feel

I want my heart to leap with joy

to become full to overflowing

at the sight of

all this beauty

I want love bursting forth

Unrestrained

Flowing

To the lonely, the fearful, the hurting

souls that surround me

I want the sacred woven into my being

To come alive again

And here is the great truth

Only the holy can thaw the holy

Revitalize, animate, quicken

This heart

Only the beloved can make

This heart burn within

and give me back

what hateful souls have stolen

a heart that beats fiercely

for justice, for peace,

for others

a heart that can feel, respond,

ache, thrill

and love

From meritocracy to grace

It takes all of us a long time to move from power to weakness, from glib certitude to vulnerability, from meritocracy to the ocean of grace.

                                                          Richard Rohr

God is not at all

like we might want our God to be

we love to point to the God of creation

and focus on omnipotence and omniscience

we look for God in mighty acts

acts of power

acts of dominance, even wrath

and since think of God this way

our faith is defined

accordingly

to follow God means power

to follow God means safety and ease

wealth and success

and we stand, Pharisee like

on our pillars of righteousness

believing (although we may not actually admit this)

that we have done something

to earn our place

in the circle of God’s love

and we stand secure, and comfortable

Palm Sunday

The Upper Room

Gethsemane

The Cross

should remind us

that God’s ultimate act of power

was profoundly expressed through vulnerability

and weakness

through yielding

and giving

all

that there might be an end to hate

and the birth of love

Forgive me, for all those moments

when I fail to see you in the little acts

of vulnerability and love

Forgive me Lord, for the times I forget

that is it when I am vulnerable

when I am a server (not the served)

that is when I am willing to

give pieces of myself

that I am most intensely on Your Way

Forgive me when I think that being yours

Is a matter of merit

Help me Lord, drift gently on the ocean of grace

The remnant rocks

Yahweh works slowly and humbly to reform any society, starting from the edges and the bottom… It is the consistent biblical theme of themes.  The victims are the victors...

The holy nation… emerges by a divine winnowing process.  The whole group never gets the message, but a smaller group (the remnant) carries the love and hope and restoration forward after each purification (that is after the trials and tribulations the people endure)…

Richard Rohr (The Tears of Things)

“In your midst I will leave a humble and lowly people, those who remain will seek all their refuge in Yahweh” (Zephaniah 3:12)

The normal power systems of the world worship themselves and not God

Ah, the patience of Sacred

perhaps the creative power

woven into all

that amazing diversity

of color

shape

gender

function

that is

the mountains and rivers

skies and clouds

wind and rain (and snow)

that is elk and deer

foxes and skunks

rats too

that is you and I

that is black, brown, white

every shade imaginable

that is the colors of the rainbow

every gender possible

knows something we do not

that the love and ingenuity

that is part of each of us

that sacred presence

we carry with us

knowingly

or not

through all of our enfleshment

is more powerful

than small people trying to be big

weak people trying to be strong

is a reality that will prevail

over fear, hate, and greed

that will overcome cruelty

and all the machinations of

malevolent and malicious people

God has always had special place

In God’s heart for “the least of these.”

Even more profound is the fact that God uses

that which is humble, even small

to move the work of love forward

don’t look to the pulpit

the White House (especially there)

don’t wander through the halls of power

hoping to find the answer

look in the immigrant camp

in the prison in El Salvador

in the homeless shelter

wander through the foodbank

that is where God is to be found

where hope is to be found

in the tiny, often powerless remnant

that remembers

to hang on to love

to Yahweh

to kindness and compassion

God knows

that is where restoration is to be found

and patiently nurtures

the tiny seed

that ultimately

will change everything

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to abolish things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God.”  (I Corinthians 1:27-29)

On that day

On that day I will re-erect the tottering hut of David

On waking

It is Tuesday

Five o’clock AM

it’s Tuesday

why should I get up

I don’t want to get up

perhaps I could lie here

all day

forever

it is Tuesday

I wonder what the man of lies

will do today

do I even want to know

what if I simply did not read the news

would it go away

it is Tuesday

is there anything on my calendar

that matters

that would make a difference

to anyone, anywhere

is there anything I can do

that will help turn the tide

away from hate toward love

away from exclusion to inclusion

anything I can do to soothe the soul

of an LGBTQI+ friend who is frightened

the old person terrified

the check won’t come

the person barely making it day by day

on the end of poverty, hunger, homelessness

it is Tuesday

I know I need to get up

pull up my big boy pants

and get to work

yes, there are things to be challenged

there are sermons to write

minutes to complete

people to call

services to be planned

groceries to be bought

it all seems so mundane

but there are people who need to be heard

people who need a presence

people who need to be affirmed

hugged

smiled at

treated with compassion

love

there are people who need me

and I need them

it is Tuesday

I don’t want to get up

But I can’t just lie here

all day

forever

No one expected the golden calf

I can imagine

Moses headed down the mountain

Head filled with expectations

Of how I was going to be

In his hands, treasures

The words of God

A vision of life together

Where the people

Freed by God,

Led by God

Sustained by God

Loving God, And each other

And are at peace with themselves

Violence free

Fearless

Content

But that is not what he found

Instead, he found a people

Worshipping

That which could not free, lead,

Sustain

Something dead

Robbing them of life

And community

A bad coping mechanism, a cheap replacement

A faux savior

With nothing to offer

But falsehood

A costly god

Who robbed them of more than gold

He did not want to be a prophet

He did not want to

See what he saw

He did not want to be placed in a position

To reveal

Correct

But he had no choice

Those dancing around the golden calf

Were lost

Doomed

If he did not speak

The tables crashed and cracked

The dust rose from the dried earth

The golden calf

Was toppled, burned, crushed

Dust to dust

a bitter draught

it was a painful lesson

a hard stop

in the end?

they woke up, repented

And started over again

But the journey was longer and harder

And more painful

Consequences

I do not want to be a prophet

I have the dream of being a part of a people

Freed by God,

Led by God

Sustained by God

Of a people loving God

And each other

At peace with themselves

Violence free

Fearless

Content

Instead, I stand

With little more than the scriptures in my hand

With that dream of a people

Who are poor in spirit, merciful, and kind,

Ready to be blessed and be a blessing

Instead, I see a  people

Worshipping things other

Than GodIs, GodWithUs, GodInUs

watching them make idols

out of power, wealth

and yes people

I see a people unable to trust

unable to wait

trying to make it happen - without god

using human power

human strategies

human cruelty

so here I stand

knowing that what is happening leads only

to stagnation, and death

bleached bones

in the desert

the cheap replacements

the faux saviors have nothing to offer

they are costly idols that rob

us all of our humanity

I cannot be silent

I must speak

It might work, it might not

They might listen, they might not

They may cast me away

And continue their dance

But still

I must speak

I do not want to be a prophet

It seems I may not have a choice

In the matter

At

All

hitting back, or not

Reference: John 18:20-23

A man strikes Jesus in the face for speaking the truth.

Jesus

when the man

struck your face

you asked him a question of integrity.

Help all of us

in situations of

stress

to ask direct

questions.

Because you did.

And while it

didn’t save you

it kept you

close to

your own

beautiful heart.

Amen

What is the worst thing

about all this?

The lies, the cruelty,

the apathy?

Is it that the poor are being abandoned?

The vulnerable neglected?

Minorities oppressed and

women devalued?

Is it the hate, the racism,

the greed that passes all understanding?

Or is it that we are

losing our humanity

the image

We feel so helpless

as we are sucked

into the vortex of chaos

and unthinking brutality?

Is it that people are being

denied and erased

and that as the hot fire

of affront

rages

our hearts too

are wounded

We are being made into what we resist

people who do not see other people

as Sacred Children

who do not respect

and cherish

Jesus when struck

did not strike back

he sought

connection and understanding

He treated his assailant

with the respect

he was not given

Lord, keep me close to my heart

and to yours

in this time of stress

when the

mostly fearful and unknowing

strike

Let us ask why

seek to unwrap

the truth

so that both they and we

see and understand

May we create, if only for a moment

connection

a sense of common humanity

They may not change

or come to understand

we may not stop

the violence

Perhaps those who would

use power

to destroy

will still prevail,

continue on their path

We may not rescue ourselves

from the devastation

but maybe

at a deeper level than we understand

we will

Blessed are...

…Jesus gave his attention to those on the margins, whom society had rejected or looked down on: women living in a man’s world, despised Samaritan neighbors from across the border, people who were outcast because of illness or deformity, or who just failed to “fit in.”

Whenever we feel shut out or shut down, Jesus can fill us with this kind of defiant joy and unexpected determination.  And, living in the Spirit of God, we also have the capacity to “be Christ” to one another: lifting one another up, and transforming each other’s experience from rejection to rejoicing.

blessed are those precious souls

whom the politics of abuse

the religion of exclusion

have driven to the margins

outside the circle of worth

and grace

blessed is the immigrant

fearfully hiding

the trans person, erased

the person who is assumed to be deficit

unworthy

because they happen to be

a woman,

or a person of color

blessed are they

the mournful poor

the oppressed grieving

the quietly kind

the shut out shut down

GodWithUs is with them

they are the sheep found

the brother returned

they are the people

invited to the table, to the feast of love

there they are

GodInThem

Transforming

Lamentation to hope

Sorrow to joy

there they are in the fields

the detention centers

the unemployment lines

the dry places under bridges

being Christ

to one another

lifting each other up

blessed are they

those people of defiant joy

they are loved, valued, welcomed

included

they are the chased after

sought

by One who will not let them go

and theirs is the kin-dom of heaven
