Welcome

Primitive religion is not believed, it is danced!

Arthur Darby Nock

Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

The Promise of Love

I once asked a bird,

“How is it that you fly in this gravity

Of darkness?”

She responded

“Love lifts me”

          Hafiz ala Ladinsky

In participatory eschatology we ask, “What does the future hold?”  The answer begins, “That depends.  It depends on you and me.  God holds out to us at every moment a brighter future; the issue is whether we are willing to receive it and work with God to help created it…”

Brian McLaren, A New Kind of Christianity

The sky glows

Gold

Above the Seven Devils

Light oozing into darkness

Warmth caressing the bitter sky

What will this day bring?

As malign forces create a world of chaos

And destruction

Creation in reverse

Order to disorder

The Word of God denied

Each day holds promise

Or not

Our choice

Each day holds the possibility

Of a return to The Garden

The chance that we will follow

Cloud and Fire

Love

Out of the wasteland of

Fear, and hate, and greed

But we can choose to remain

Squatting in the darkness

Mumbling our resentments

Under our breath

Exuding the foul odor

Of fear

Have we forgotten the power

Of

Love?

How love created

All

How love carefully shaped

Each of us

Beautiful just the way we are

Have we forgotten

How love brings hope out of despair

Light into the darkness?

How it transforms

Lifting us from the rubble

We have created

Through our greed and lust

For power

Bringing life out of death

So we rise

And

Rise

What will we create this day?

This day

That the Lord has made?

It depends

Be not afraid

I think we are frightened every

Moment of our lives

Until we

Know

Sacred

          Hafiz ala Ladinsky

__________________________

Fear

It crouches waiting

Like my barn cat

Ready

To pounce

Another headline

More abuses

Children zip tied, standing in their underwear

Shivering in the street

A deluge of lies

Malign people

With

Power

It springs from seemingly

Nowhere

And I am in its jaws

Being torn apart

Some mornings I can barely breathe

My stomach roils

My mind is in chaos

As if a hundred pundits

Are screaming at me

Be afraid!

Evil is winning, love is losing

The planet is burning

Foul people are abusing the innocent and vulnerable

There is no hope

But amidst the chaos

That still, small voice

Remember

Remember how I, with a mighty hand

Delivered

Remember how I, by giving myself totally

Delivered

Remember how death was turned to life

Hate to love

Fear to hope

Evil has its day

It comes like falling rain

Soaking the earth

Drowning our souls

Vicious unfeeling ones

Batter the good

Iniquity piles up

Until we cannot see the good

The noise of hate grows until

The cries of the oppressed are no longer heard

And yet

We know God

We feel God in our bones

And God says

Be not afraid

Live

Live life with joy

And hope

With generosity

And kindness

I am here

And remember

What I can do

With and through

You

Points of light

Unfortunately, the clock is ticking, the hours are going by. The past increases, the future recedes. Possibilities decreasing, regrets mounting.

          Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

          George Orwell, 1984

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make, which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

          Marian Wright Edelman

________________________________________________________

I had a dream the other night that we were all

a faceless gathered throng

Teetering on a precipice

The small sliver of ground on which we huddled

Was slowly crumbling, and we watched it disappear

As moment by moment, the edge

Crept closer and closer

We were about to slide

Down a slippery slope

Into a dark void

Some in the throng

Stronger, healthier, bigger,

Were shoving those

With less power forwards

Pushing them into

The darkness

Thinking they could delay or even avoid

A fatal fall

But still the earth beneath our feet

Crumbled

So did the dream

But I woke with an empty feeling.

A gnawing pain that tore at my heart

It was a feeling I knew.

Helplessness

I feel helpless right now.

I wonder if deep down, everyone does

Not just those of us watching the maw of authoritarianism

Consume freedom

But those marching in lockstep

Toward the cliff

Fleeing one slippery slope (that they call Wokeness)

Toward another

I am not sure we can avoid a plummet

We human creatures

Into the dark depths of fear and hate

The clock is ticking

We may well plummet and take all of creation with us.

But I have been told

By people who have watched the world collapse before

Not to “tire of doing good”

Not to sit silently, stolidly

A watcher

Because even though the world may crumble

Our souls do not need to

There can be chaos without

And a kind of peace within

A freedom

To be compassionate and kind

I cannot do great things.

But as Mother Teresa reminds us

I can do small things with great love

There is an empty shelf at a food bank

That I can fill

There is an LGBTQI+ friend, battered by the regime

That I can welcome and embrace

There are lies I can counter with facts (whether anyone listens or not)

There is hate I can counter with love

As I love my neighbor, even if they fly a Trump flag

And cheer mass deportation

This seems to be the question

What can we do now

In this moment?

We do not know what is in that abyss

(we can guess)

We do not know if we will survive

We do not know who might survive with us (if we do)

But we can carry the light

We can carry love

And when all is said and done

We can pick each other up

And slowly climb

Jacob’s ladder

Not to heaven

But to a new earth

That is like heaven

Am I a fool

To believe that what I do

matters?

Probably

But hopefully it is the foolishness of the cross

The foolishness of servanthood and sacrifice

The way

For the wisdom of God is greater than human wisdom

And god chose kenosis, emptying

As the Sacred MO (modus operandi)

Jesus is proof positive

So we must do what we can

To keep the light of love burning

We are going to need it

And it will (I do believe), work

Managing the Unsolvable

“Instead of contradicting each other’s views, the task is to supplement each other’s views in order to see the whole picture. Each of them has key pieces to the puzzle. Paradoxically, opposition becomes a resource.”

Barry Johnson

I am going to hold my breath until I turn blue

Fine

Go ahead

Try

I am going to hold fast to my viewpoint and never let it go

Fine

Go ahead

Try

If you actually succeed, you will die

If you actually succeed, what you hold dear will die

Every inhale must become an exhale.

Every exhale must lead to an inhale.

If I am out of oxygen, I need fresh air

Inhale

But soon there is too much carbon monoxide

There is only one solution

Exhale

The carbon monoxide is cleared out

But then we are back where we started

Too little oxygen

And so it all starts over again

Our solutions are never really solutions.

Someone once said that for every complex problem

There is a simple solution

And it’s wrong

We cannot have an inhale without an exhale

And we cannot have an exhale without an inhale

We cannot have one end of a polarity

Without the other end of that polarity

Each end by itself is incomplete.

Each end needs something from the other

Needs

Something

From the other

We tend to deny this.

We believe that we can live on one end odr the other

In isolation

But all we get is staleness.

Narrowness

Incompleteness

And we end up gasping,

Failing,

And flailing

I dislike the right end of the ideological polarity

I find it seriously bereft of things I think are important

Flexibility

Welcome

Compassion

Servanthood

But oddly enough

If I look honestly at the left end of the polarity

If find it seriously bereft of things I think are important

It has its own inflexibility

And sometimes, frankly, it is vague and cloudy

It eats its own

At the end of the poles are two tight balls

That need new life breathed into them

That need

Something

From the other end of the spectrum

Jonathan Rauch talks about

Thin faith

Sharp faith

And thick faith (I prefer fat faith)

Thin faith is committed to social change

To justice and peace

But it has left too much behind

God is, perhaps, too vague

(One friend said they envision God kind of like a huge bowl of tapioca pudding)

Values are too conditional, and this faith can be morally derivative rather than

Morally formative

There are too few norms left; they are shattered (yes, the norms have to be the right norms, and some deserve to be shattered)

Sharp faith is fear-based

And is used as a weapon.

It is enmeshed with nationalism, authoritarianism (at many levels, including family)

And sees itself as the persecuted saviors of the world

The protectors of God (as if)

Thick faith embraces the important values

Jesus embraced

Love, welcome, forgiveness

Social justice

Care of the poor

It moves forward seeking to solve real problems and create change

But it is clear about its core values

And it understands the need for some structure

some rules

And yes, some compromise

Thick faith accepts that this is about the individual

But not the individual alone (if you were to die tonight...)

But instead all people

All creatures

The entire planet

It is a faith that moves back and forth

Between the poles

As Jesus moved back and forth between

All the different groups of his time

The outcasts and the establishment

The rich and the poor

The self-righteous and the repentant

The Samaritan and the Jew, and the Roman

Touching them all

When I encounter that person

Who embraces MAGA,

Who is on the “other” end of the Christian (ideological) spectrum

Can I see past the differences?

Can I look for the things I CAN embrace

(there will be things I can’t)

Can I think deeply about what I NEED from them?

And not just about how they are “wrong”

And oh, how I wish

That instead of seeing themselves as the persecuted righteous

They could see that my version of the faith

Has something, a lot of things, that would help them

Become the people

I hopefully believe

They want to be

But this is hard

It is difficult for Christian nationalists to understand

That God doesn’t need their protection

And that it is not necessarily just, right, or even Christian

To rewrite secular law

To reshape the secular world

To reflect their religious, but mostly cultural, principles

It is hard for social/spiritual liberalism to move away

From its own forms of purism and perfectionism

The left has its own deadly sins

Can both sides come to understand that trying to

Dominate or destroy the other side

Will not work?

And will weaken

And not strengthen

The presence of Sacred in this world?

Inhale, take in the new, the challenging,

Hold.  But not too long

Exhale, let go of those things that do not work

In the formula of the Kingdom

Start all over again.

Everyday

Left foot, right foot, left foot,

Breathe

I can do this

Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.

                     Louis Armstrong

Friend to my son (5) after I got my doctorate.

Friend:  Bryce, what does it feel like to have a dad who is a doctor

Bryce: (thinking of his grandfather, who was a medical doctor)

Oh, it's OK, but he is not the kind of doctor who does anybody any good.

Me:   …….

___________________________________________________________________________________

I sit and stare blankly at the screen

my mind is empty

my hands are still

I do not know how long I have been sitting this way

My mind,

My heart

My soul

An anaesthetized wound

I cannot find the energy to think

To write

To move

To act

I am frozen

Brought to a complete stop

By a sense of futility

I have always been a striver.

I have always worked hard.

Perhaps too hard

And I have always wanted,

In my striving

To make a difference.

I know I have “done things”

Sometimes well

Sometimes?

Well….

As a pastor, I had churches grow,

As a mental health director, the program flourished

I did cool things

Like redesigning a primary care delivery system in Azerbaijan

But right now

When the world is stretched thin by hate and fear

And hopelessness abounds

I feel hopeless

A little useless

It is one blow after another.

A plethora of little losses

A church member disappears (we cannot afford any losses)

My country (IMHO) is assailed by forces that seek

Control and retribution.  And those forces seem to be winning.

Each day

I am diminished

Erased

Perhaps ministers don’t retire,

They simply run out of hope, love, peace, and joy

Sometimes nothing works

The mind shuts down

The words don’t come

The music dies

And you feel like you aren’t the kind of person

Who does anybody any good

And yet, and yet

For all this, hope remains.

There in the deep-down places

because we each have someplace within

in that place which makes us who we are

something sacred

something positive

something yes

It might not be very big

but as Jesus said,

if it is as big as a mustard seed, it will do

and if we can move to that place

live, even for a moment in that space

if we can tap into that love

that forgiveness

that hope

that peace

then we can be people who leak life energy

because then we are defined

by that love

by who and what we are for (not against)

In a world of “no”

We can live “yes”

It is Saturday night.

I will get up tomorrow and preach the good news, yes

And hopefully live it too, yes

And I will travel to a church with big questions

And try to be God’s yes

And I will look in the mirror

And say “yes”

I can do this

At least one more day

We need a leader

…Jesus is Lord meant – joyfully and defiantly - that Caesar wasn’t…[this three-word creed helped delineate]   the striking contrast between two competing kingdoms and their “Lords” – on who would gladly torture and kill to establish dominance via the Pax Romana and another who would willingly suffer and die to establish reconciliation via the Pax Christ.

Not ready

It

Is not easy

To stop thinking ill

Usually one must enter into a friendship

Who has accomplished that great feat himself

Then

Something

Might start to rub off on you

Of that

Sometimes

I am not ready to let go of my suspicions

That there is something evil

Lurking around every corner

I am not ready to believe

That maybe that person

Whose reality is different

Who sees the world and thinks about it

A different way

Than I

Might really

Be someone I need to listen to

Not just critically

But with curiosity

Where did that come from?

That belief?

That priority

That way of seeing the world?

What can I learn

For there is something to learn

From everyone

Sometimes I need to take a deep breath

And hold it

Until my body screams for oxygen

And then gasping

Takes in the fresh air

Sometimes my mind needs to slow down

And clean out the flotsam

So I can receive

Something new

I must make room

For the other

And let sit on the couch in my soul

And have a cup of tea

As we solve the problems of the world

Perhaps that person has something I need

I will never know

If I do not welcome them

Past the gate of my distrust and aversion

Perhaps I have something they need

That they will never hear

As long as we pound each other

With our opinions and our judgements

Jesus, maybe I need to sit down first with you

And listen as you tell me about grace

And love and forgiveness

As you deconstruct and reconstruct me.

Maybe then I can sit down at the table

As you did

With tax collectors and sinners,

And receive the gifts

They have to offer

me

maybe I need to let my better angels

who hang around in my soul

waiting for an opportunity

a chance to find the better angels

in the one I have defined as

enemy

Maybe I need to believe that there is

within all of us,

the capacity for goodness

and yes, reason

and that we can

as we sit around the table of grace

lessen the selfishness and fear

and find empathy and unity

I hear the voices that say

It will never be

I am willing, they are not

I will listen, they will not

But I will never know

If I don’t try

Maybe the problem is (at last partly) me

And if I should come to harm

Because I insist on love

If I should face ridicule and rejection

From all sides

Well

That, Jesus, would be something

You know a lot about

Time for a Cage Fight

At night, if I feel a divine loneliness

I tear the doors off Love’s mansion

And wrestle God onto the floor

He becomes so pleased with me

And says,

“Our hearts should do this more.”

          Hafiz via Daniel Ladinsky

We must face the fact that many different saviors can be smuggled in under the name “Jesus,” just as many different deities can be disguised under the term “god,” and vastly different ways of living can be promoted under the name “Christianity.”  Jesus can be a victim of identity theft, and people can say and do things in his name that he would never do.

When it comes to God

How do we behave?

Do we sit around in a parlor

Anointed with doilies, sipping Lady Gray

Engaged in polite conversation

Never straying into the unseemly or difficult?

Or

Is it time for an all-out rumble

A time for calling out (how long O Lord how long)

And being called out

Jesus is recorded as saying

κμν κα μες σύνετοί στε

He is talking to the disciples,

And is clearly frustrated.

In the King James Version, which tends to sanitise the Greek

to make it sound holier in English,

The words of Jesus are translated as,

Are you also still without understanding?

Even the New Revised Standard Version (updated) keeps this tone.

The New International Version translates it as

Are you still so dull?

But I like the way the Message puts it

Are you being willfully stupid?

Are we?

In another place, he calls the religious folk

Whited sepulchers

Painted tombs

Righteous on the outside

But rotten within

Part of our problem is that we love our comfort

We want to be in our safe zone

And so we define God, and then Jesus,

In a way that works for us,

Makes us “comfortable”

Sometimes that means we interpret God as

a King who dominates.  Who demands and punishes

Sometimes we make God ultimately irrelevant.

We make Jesus fire insurance,

Ignoring the call to be people who help the poor and fight injustice

He is just our ladder out of hell

It is not, perhaps, that we are stupid

As much as it is that God is beyond our understanding

Yes, Jesus, we are still without understanding!

And so we make shit up.

And when we come to stuff that doesn’t fit

The God, the Jesus we have created

We deflect, reinterpret, and avoid

What we need to do is wrestle.

Someone once said that “For every complex problem, there is a solution

And it is wrong.”

God wants engagement

God wants us to struggle with the big questions

Of right and wrong

(not legal and illegal, because some stuff that is legal is not right)

God wants us to struggle with his call

To be people of fierce love

What does that mean

When we are faced with people we want to hate

When we see people lying, hurting others, destroying the planet

How do we love our enemies?

What does that mean?  What does it look like, really?

It is time, perhaps, to move out of the parlor (pew?)

And meet God in some cage fighting

For perhaps there is really no other way.

To meet the One

Who wrestled with God

Chose to love all

And asks us to join him

in doing both

Who are you?

Some want to “recast Jesus as a limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in His hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes. In Revelation, Jesus is a prize fighter with a tattoo down His leg, a sword in His hand and the commitment to make someone bleed. That is a guy I can worship. I cannot worship the hippie, diaper, halo Christ because I cannot worship a guy I can beat up."

My Jesus can beat up your Jesus!

Mark Driscoll (as quoted by Brian McLaren in a New Kind of Christianity)

___________________________________

Who the heck are you, Jesus?

Are you a long-haired hippie freak?

Or the white supremacists due with a tattoo and an AR-15?

Are you the Republican or Democrat Jesus

Or the get-rich-quick Jesus

Or the “God hates you” Jesus

Or the nostalgic Jesus of my youth

The Jesus everyone (mostly) agreed on

Who blessed America

Thank you very much!!

Are you the Jesus of The Revelation, with eyes like fire

And a robe dipped in blood

Or the Christmas Jesus,

A tiny wrinkled soul baptized in amniotic fluid?

It matters Lord, a lot.

In my younger days,

A college student full of fervor

We used to sing

“Make me a servant, Lord, make me like You,

For you were a servant, Lord, make me one too.

Make me a servant, do what You must do,

To make me a servant, Lord make me like You”

But do I really accept you,

That incomprehensible human yet God

Servant yet Lord

Confusing as hell Jesus

Who says “follow me”

Who says “be like me”

I like you safe Jesus.

Nicely outlined

So I can color within the lines.

But you are messy

You came to stir things up

To create change

To change me

For this one small moment that I

Plod and trod across this planet

I will never figure you out,

And I am always in danger of getting it wrong

I fear getting it wrong

But I do know this

You are all humility, all peace

All love

You are also justice

and resistance and defiance

You embrace me and challenge me

You love me as I am and want me to be better

and you must be a little frustrated right now

by me

by us all

It must pain you to see us hate in your name

Promote violence in your name

Support and almost worship

Deeply flawed and divisive people

In your name

Lord, I don’t have you all figured out

But I have run into you

Time and time again

In odd and fearful places

In strange and troubled,

and wonderful people

I have experienced you

As a fire in my soul

A soft breeze upon my face

A longing in my heart

And I love you

And I need you

And I want to be a channel of your presence (and peace)

In this crazy, hate-filled, lie-soaked world

We’re in a place of disruption and loss.  That is always the way God works in terms of creating something new.  The primary thing is to say to people, don’t panic about the sense of homelessness that you feel.  Don’t panic about the kind of bewilderment that you feel.  That can actually be a sign of grace.”

          Russell Moore

Christianity is a religion of exile, not domination.  Christianity is designed to be peculiar, not ordinary; counter-cultural, not consumerist.  “The church would be more faithful, more distinctly Christ’s people, if we actually understood that we don’t live in the promised land; we live in exile... what seems to define a great deal of the American church is fear… What if the crisis of this moment is actually a deep invitation to a new way of understanding our location? Our identity?.. Today, may we be faithful exiles.  For it’s that which will reveal the reality of the love of God who knows and sees people in exile, to restore and remake them to be the light and salt that can do as exiles what only we can do.”

Mark Labberton ( a friend and fellow Whitman grad and Presbyterian) quoted

By Jonathan Rauch in Cross Purposes.

“This land is your land, this land is my land”

It may be

But it sure doesn’t feel like it.

I don’t feel like I am at home

I am surrounded not by paradise, but by

Wilderness

That place of dryness and danger

And endless nothing

I am surrounded by ICE and by blind hate

By deception and denial

By resentment, rage, and retribution

I feel like an exile!

Thank God

For God is doing a new thing!

And no

I can’t see it

Not yet, perhaps never

But I know

That even though right now

Good is bad and bad is good

Right now as people strive for dominance

Strive to oppress and minimize others

Right now, as injustice rolls like a mighty river

And fear like a never-ending spring

But I know

Even as I wander in exile

No longer recognizing the place (country) in which I live

That God is

That God is love

That God is present,

And that even though I feel

Lost and bewildered

Love is present, among us and in us

And love will win, eventually

We are in exile

But we do our best work in the wilderness

As we participate with God

In making a way

A highway for love, and righteousness, justice, and compassion

We must remember we are exiles.

For only then

Can we bring newness and love

Into this world

Only then can we keep moving

Toward home

We Just Don't Care

It is not contrary to reason to prefer the destruction of the whole world to the scratching of my finger.

It is not just the far right who struggle to feel the fear and pain of others.

It is also, in a profound way, all of us.

Having worked in Mexico and in other countries with the poor, with refugees and IDPs, it is easier for me to have deep empathy for those who, desperate, fleeing conflict and oppression, have come to our borders for safety, for a future.

It is not so easy for me to enter into the fear of that right-wing Christian who feels his/her faith system is being persecuted. Because I am a follower of Jesus, and I don't feel my faith system is being persecuted and oppressed.  I don't, perhaps I can't feel it.

One has to have personal contact with real people dealing with real oppression, or suppression, real racism, real poverty, to truly feel WITH them and for them.

Otherwise, empathy, or what I like to call the Jesus perspective, is lost.

Jim Rigby tells this story in a recent blog.

"Jimmy Kimmel made a tearful plea for affordable health care by talking about his newborn baby needing heart surgery. Kimmel had been moved by the poor parents he saw at the hospital and wondered what would happen to them if they lost health insurance.

At one point, Kimmel basically said that taking care of sick children is something we can all agree upon, regardless of our political stance. In response, Republican Joe Walsh, tweeted, “Sorry Jimmy Kimmel: your sad story doesn't obligate me or anybody else to pay for somebody else's health care.”

If you have  never had to watch a sick child suffer because you didn't have access to medical care, you don't "get it"

The other day, I was in a conversation where someone commented,  “It is not OK to kill children.  We can all agree on that, right!? That it is not OK to kill children.”  That would seem like a no-brainer.

And yet we are killing children.

In Gaza

In America, as we refuse to deal with our gun problem

All across the world as we kill our USAID program and doom millions of people to death.

We are killing children as we reject science and vaccines

We are killing the future of children as we destroy the planet

We harm children as we deny many children of poverty health care and an equal education.

The list could go on and on

No, we do not all agree that it is not OK to kill children.

When it comes to power and money, children are expendable.

Jesus talked about taking care of the “little ones” and said that it was the child-like (not childish as in a certain president) who would inherit the Kingdom of God.

“Do not hinder the children”

But we are.

A culture, a movement, that can turn its back on children

Is spiritually, ethically, and morally deficient

And knows not Jesus

At least not the Jesus I love and follow

Restoration not Retribution

“If our desire for justice is not rooted primarily in the pursuit of restoration, then reconciliation will be nearly impossible to achieve. It is precisely because grace is undeserved that makes it grace… If our social justice is guided by retribution, we will simply perpetuate the use and abuse of power to inflict violence.

That face, those eyes

The smirks

The lies

Some people are easy to hate

Or at least despise

And when we are in that place

We do not wish our antagonist well

If there is a hell

We hope there is a spot reserved for them

Way down deep

Where it is really hot

We want retribution

This day I went for a walk

And watched the sun rise above the trees

and thought about dark things

the air was filled with the

shards of fury

as I thought about ICE

and people brutalized,

as I thought about the machinations of evil

robbing people of agency

of the power

to flourish

How dare they

I hope they pay, dearly

There is a certain pleasure to retributive justice

To “owning” the other side

Getting even

We even make God that kind of God

Retributive

Angry

Who sent Jesus to the cross

To satisfy a need for retribution

This hurts me more than it hurts you

Retribution is necessary for restoration

Spare the rod spoil the child

But do we really have to punish to restore?

MAGA seems to think so

Support DEI?, We will make you pay!

Welcome LGBTQI+?  No grant for you!

Try to welcome the stranger?  We will put up walls

And kick out the infidels

Yeah!  USA!

But I keep thinking of Jesus on the Cross

Saying

“Father forgive them”

I keep thinking of that other man

Hanging there beside him

Today

Today you shall be with me in paradise

Not because you have been punished and “paid your debt”

But because I am choosing to love you heaven

Reconciliation

Perhaps those who say God’s righteousness must be satisfied

Perhaps it is all about payment and punishment

But even if God turns God’s wrath on God’s self

There is still violence there

And violence leads to violence

Perhaps the cross was God saying

I could enact retribution

But I won’t

This stops here

This anger, resentment,

This need to hurt

To get revenge

Stops, here, right, now

Because I am about love

Because I am love

I am not that loving or kind

I am not that forgiving

I want to be

But I have to admit

There are people I hope “get theirs”

And soon!

But that will not solve anything

It will just perpetuate the cycle

Of violence

And then I (we)

Will be “them”

And we will never come together

We will never be able

To solve the real problems

Of hunger, homelessness, illness

Instead, we will spend our time and energy

Hurting and destroying

Not helping and healing

We will have to keep using and abusing power

For the moment we stop

The moment we dare give the other side an opening

They will use and abuse power on us

And on and on and on the pain goes

And that is no way to live

That is how we (all) die

Oneing

Before conversion, we tend to think God is out there. After transformation, God is not out there, and we don’t look at reality. We’re in the middle of it now; we’re a part of it. This whole thing is what I call the mystery of participation. Paul is obsessed with the idea that we’re all participating in something bigger than ourselves. “In Christ” is his code phrase for this new participatory life. In fact, he uses the phrase “in Christ” 164 times to describe this organic unity and participation in Christ. “I live no longer, not I; but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). “In Christ” is his code phrase for this new participatory life.

It’s a completely different experience of life. I’m not writing the story by myself. I’m a character inside of a story that is being written in cooperation with God and the rest of humanity.

It is shocking really

leaving us breathless

inspired

in Spirited

what audacity

to think that the Sacred is not only in us

but that we are in,

participate in the Sacred

God in us

Christ in us

Spirit in us

That we can understand, a little

But “I am in God”?

That changes everything

Because it is no longer just

Jesus and me

It is Jesus and I

and every other creature on this planet

We are bound together

as brothers and sisters because God is in us

Namaste

The sacred in me greets the sacred in you

The Christ in me greets the Christ in you

But if we are all part of the same whole

The same power and reality that is beyond comprehension

That bond is even more profound

Because then

Whenever we hurt, neglect, or oppress

Another human creature (at the very least)

We do damage not just to them

But to God

And to ourselves

Jesus said

Whatever you do to another

Whenever you use your power ON another

To control, or neglect

You do it to me

Whenever you use your power FOR another

To help, comfort, and heal

You do it to me

But do we understand that when we do damage to another

We do damage to ourselves

Do we get that our “wins” are also “losses”

Unless everyone wins?

When an immigrant is brutally grabbed, we are all hurt

When a person demeans and ridicules another, we are all diminished

When we hate another, that hate seeps into our souls?

We create pain for that reality that created and sustains

Everything

Yes, Christ is in me

But I am in Christ/God

I am you, and you are me (and we are all together)

We are

And that changes everything

We have a choice

Humans have a propensity to sin; life is full of temptations and our own natures tempt and mislead us.  But we do NOT inherit sinfulness; we are born innocent.  As our lives unfold, we draw closer to God or farther from God through the choices we make… We learn goodness by confronting choices in the world and choosing well; and in the process of learning goodness, we become more like God…Life is not a process of moral repair… it is a process of moral development.

The church provides an account of Christian citizenship which is not defensive, fearful, or self-isolating, but which embraces the messy frustration process of negotiation as bringing Americans closer to God.  It renounces as scriptural the zero-sum…  mentality in which only one side can triumph and everything depends on winning the next election..  It rejects any effort to model politics on warfare, any desire to drink the other side’s tears.  It also rejects the radical version of progressivism which would impose secular law on religious life….

          Jonathan Rauch, Cross Purposes

Adam and Eve sat under a tree

And, so the story goes, gained the knowledge of good and evil

Acquired the ability to engage in moral reasoning

Is this right, or is this wrong??

Or, in Jesus' terms, is this love, or is it not love?

As children of God, we cannot be forced to follow

It must be a willful offering, a decision of

Heart, mind, and soul

Instead we get to choose,

And wait, there is more

For us to have moral agency

We not only have choices,

But we are blessed, or is it cursed, with the consequences of our choices.

But it is in the freedom, in the choosing

That we “grow up unto Christ”  (Ephesians 4)

This is how we become more than dependent infants

Or worse, an oppressed and controlled people

With a cruel God

This is how we become real

This is how we become sacred children

This is how God becomes a parent

Not a tyrant

Yes, we can choose poorly

And we can make monumental messes of our lives

Even our country, and the planet

Yes, the consequences can be good and bad

That is the risk that makes us offspring

Not slaves

Because as we walk along our given path, and make choices, good and bad,

God will walk along side us all

Each of us, individually and collectively

And work in and through our choices,

Even if they are wrong

Even as we work our way out of messes of our own making

We are growing and learning,

Growing wiser and stronger

But of course freedom is unpredictable and messy

So, we try to prevent sin by making it impossible to sin

We try to control others through coercion

And the application of power

Thus the church models its relationship to the world as warfare

And supports oppressive control

And coercion

Christians believe they need to fight, and win

Or all is lost

But all is not lost

God is always present, always working, always nudging and directing

Always seeking to make us precious children

Always creating new beginnings, so that

Sometimes we win by losing, and come alive by dying to many things

God is always seeking to move us forward

So plan A becomes plan B, becomes plan C

(I think I may be on plan 24Z)

But this says something about what kind of government

And what kind of faith system we embrace

No, gangster fascism is not OK

Using force, oppressing, creating fear

Seeking to force all into obedience to our will

Into our concept of good, or holy, is not OK

Christian nationalism and the Church of fear

Are not of God

If they were Adam and Eve would not have been given a choice

The Kings of Israel would have all be good

Jesus would not have chosen the way of servanthood and sacrifice

No, we don’t (or at least I don’t) totally understand it

And it is messy and painful

And we stumble and fall

But we fall, we fall into the arms of Grace (as Rohr puts it, we “fall upward”)

And something good happens.

I wish I had not made many of the choices I have made

(I wish people had not made the choice to vote for MAGA)

But I know this.  As a child of God I have choices.

I am free to make them, even if I choose poorly

I am not free to avoid the consequences

I also know that when I choose poorly

My God is with me, working with me

Loving me

Healing me

And that is how I learn, and grow

And become more like Christ

(OK, I have chosen to write far too long.

I will simply refer you to Hebrews 5:11-14)

Blessing on us all

And God help us
