He's really radical
this Jesus
when we think of righteous
we often think of law
of rules
and of course
of trying to obey them
which we don't
at least not very well
Ah those pesky 10 Commandments
ah the moral code of God
but Jesus goes far beyond
the boundaries and rules set in the Old Testament
paradoxically he moves beyond all boundaries
and insists
we not only do the logical
and reasonable
but to do what from a human perspective might well be seen
as illogical and unreasonable
like take care of the sinners
the losers
the vulnerable
the weak
I don't think many of us who call ourselves Christians
quite get this
in fact, in America right now its quite the opposite
Christianity, or at least parts of it
have become the champions of judgment
and harshness
budgets and laws
scream loudly
'you who are needy,
you who are poor
you who are addicted
you who have made bad choices.....'
YOU deserve nothing
no love
no help
and we side with those who "have"
and indeed reward
indifference
and yet there Jesus is
that radical
saying
"what we do to others, even the least of the others, we do to God"
Heaven, I think we have a problem!
